Most travelers cross the High Atlas on the main Tichka road. But very close by there is a much quieter alternative: the route that runs down from Telouet through the Ounila Valley to Ait Ben Haddou, following the old caravan trail.
The Kasbah of Telouet
Telouet was the seat of power of the Glaoui family, who controlled southern Morocco during the first half of the 20th century. From outside its kasbah looks like a ruin, but inside it preserves spectacular halls with painted cedar ceilings, zellige tilework and carved stucco. It is one of the best-kept secrets of the Atlas and usually has few visitors.
The Ounila Valley
From Telouet, the road runs down the Ounila Valley between red, green and ochre mountains, terraced fields and adobe villages such as Anemiter, where time seems to have stood still. This was the route used by caravans coming from the Sahara to Marrakech.
On to Ait Ben Haddou
The valley ends at Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous ksar in Morocco and a World Heritage Site. Arriving by this route, as the old merchants did, is a special way to discover it.
Tips
- The road has narrow stretches: it is best to travel with a driver who knows the area.
- Bring cash for the kasbah entrance fee and for a tea in one of the villages.
