Morocco can be visited all year round, but the best time depends on what you want to do: the desert, the mountains, the imperial cities or the coast. This guide will help you choose.
Spring (March to May): the best time
Pleasant temperatures across the country, green valleys and the Atlas peaks still covered in snow. It is ideal for combining cities and desert. In May the roses bloom in Kalaat M’Gouna.
Summer (June to August): coast and mountains
It is very hot inland, especially in Marrakech, Fez and the desert, where temperatures easily exceed 40 °C. It is a good time for the Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Tangier) and for hiking in the High Atlas, including the climb up Toubkal. If you go to the desert, activities take place at sunrise and sunset.
Autumn (September to November): another great option
Mild temperatures return, there are fewer tourists than in spring and the light is beautiful. In October the dates are harvested in the south.
Winter (December to February): sunshine and cold nights
Days are usually sunny and pleasant in Marrakech and the south, but nights are cold, especially in the desert and the Atlas, where it can snow. Bring warm clothes to sleep at the camp. New Year’s Eve in the desert is a very special experience.
What about Ramadan?
During Ramadan (its dates change every year), many restaurants close during the day and opening hours change, but you can travel without problems. At sunset, the breaking of the fast creates a very special atmosphere in the cities.
Quick summary
- Desert: October to April.
- Imperial cities: spring and autumn.
- High Atlas and Toubkal: May to October.
- Atlantic coast: all year, especially in summer.
