Chefchaouen, the blue pearl: what to see and how to visit

Chefchaouen, known as «the blue pearl», is one of the most photogenic towns in Morocco. Hidden in the Rif Mountains, its medina of houses painted in every shade of blue has a calm and relaxed atmosphere, very different from the big cities.

A little history

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a fortress to hold back the Portuguese in Ceuta. It grew with the arrival of Moriscos and Jews expelled from Spain, which explains its Andalusian feel. According to tradition, it was the Jewish community that began painting the houses blue.

What to see in Chefchaouen

  • The medina: wander up and down its blue stairways and alleys with no fixed route; every corner is a photo.
  • Outa el Hammam square: the center of local life, with cafés and views of the kasbah.
  • The Kasbah: a fortress with a garden, a small ethnographic museum and views from its tower.
  • Ras el Maa: the spring and river where women still wash clothes.
  • Spanish Mosque: walk up (about 30 minutes) to watch the sunset over the town. A must.

What to buy

Chefchaouen is famous for its hand-woven wool blankets and garments, handmade soaps and goat cheese. Prices are usually more relaxed than in Marrakech or Fez.

How to get there

It is about 2.5 hours from Tangier and about 4 hours from Fez. Many travelers visit it on a northern route linking Tangier, Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes and Fez.

Tips

  • Stay at least one night: early in the morning and at sunset the town is quiet and the light is beautiful.
  • Ask permission before photographing people.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: there are many slopes and stairs.
