Marrakech is the gateway to Morocco for many travelers and a city that leaves no one indifferent. Its ochre walls, the bustle of its souks, the scent of spices and the call to prayer from the minarets create a unique atmosphere. In this guide we tell you what to see in Marrakech, the best time to visit and some tips to make the most of the Red City.
Jemaa el-Fna square
It is the heart of the medina and the best place to start. In the morning you will see orange juice stalls, nut sellers and henna artists; as evening falls, the square fills with musicians, storytellers and food stalls where you can dine in the open air. Go up to a café terrace at sunset to see the square from above: it is one of the most magical moments of the trip.
The souks of the medina
From Jemaa el-Fna you enter a maze of alleys organized by guilds: shoemakers, blacksmiths, dyers, sellers of lamps, rugs and ceramics. Wander without hurry, haggle with a smile and don’t be afraid to say «no, thank you». If you want to shop calmly, a local guide will help you find the best workshops.
Must-see monuments
- Koutoubia Mosque: its 12th-century minaret is the symbol of the city. Non-Muslims cannot enter, but its gardens are perfect for a stroll.
- Bahia Palace: a 19th-century palace with courtyards, gardens and painted cedar ceilings.
- Saadian Tombs: mausoleums decorated with Carrara marble and carved stucco.
- Ben Youssef Madrasa: a former Koranic school with one of the most beautiful courtyards in Morocco.
- Majorelle Garden: the blue garden restored by Yves Saint Laurent, with cacti and plants from all over the world.
Beyond the medina
The modern Gueliz district has cafés, art galleries and design shops. The Menara gardens, with the Atlas in the background, are ideal for a quiet walk. And to relax after an intense day, nothing beats a traditional hammam.
When to go to Marrakech
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons: pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Summer is very hot, and in winter the days are sunny but the nights cold.
Practical tips
- Wear comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees if you visit religious sites.
- Always carry some cash in dirhams for the souks and tips.
- Stay in a riad in the medina to experience the city from the inside.
