What to see in Casablanca: much more than a movie

Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and its economic engine. Modern, cosmopolitan and facing the Atlantic Ocean, it is the arrival point in the country for many travelers. Although it lacks the old-world charm of Fez or Marrakech, it is worth spending at least a day here.

The Hassan II Mosque

It is the city’s great jewel and one of the largest mosques in the world. Built over the ocean, its minaret is more than 200 meters high. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit, with guided tours showing the impressive work of Moroccan craftsmen in marble, cedar wood, stucco and zellige.

The Corniche

Casablanca’s seafront promenade is perfect for a sunset walk, with beaches, cafés and restaurants overlooking the Atlantic.

The old medina and the Habous quarter

The old medina is small and very local. The Habous quarter, built in Moorish style during the French protectorate, is ideal for buying crafts, Moroccan sweets and olives.

Art deco architecture

Downtown Casablanca has one of the most interesting collections of art deco and neo-Moorish buildings in Africa. Stroll along Boulevard Mohammed V and Mohammed V Square to discover them.

How much time to spend

One day is enough to see the essentials. From Casablanca it is easy to continue to Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fez or Marrakech, and start a route through the imperial cities and the desert from here.
