On the other side of the High Atlas, about four hours from Marrakech, are two of the most iconic places in southern Morocco: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and the city of Ouarzazate, known as «the gateway to the desert» and «the Hollywood of Africa».
The road: the Tizi n’Tichka pass
The road from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 meters. It is one of the most beautiful drives in the country, winding between mountains, adobe Berber villages and viewpoints where you can stop for photos.
Ait Ben Haddou
This fortified adobe village, built on a hill next to the Ounila river, is the best-preserved ksar in Morocco and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It was an important stop on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Cross the river, climb its alleys to the old granary at the top and enjoy the views of the valley.
If it looks familiar, that’s normal: films and series such as Gladiator, The Jewel of the Nile, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra and Game of Thrones were shot here.
Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is a calm city surrounded by desert landscapes. Its main attractions are:
- Kasbah of Taourirt: the former residence of the powerful Glaoui family, with decorated rooms and views from its terraces.
- Film studios: you can visit the sets of major international productions.
- Cinema Museum: dedicated to the history of films shot in the region.
The Kasbah of Telouet
If you have time, take a detour through the Ounila Valley to the Kasbah of Telouet, the former palace of the Glaoui. From outside it is in ruins, but its inner halls preserve spectacular decoration.
Day trip or desert route?
You can visit Ait Ben Haddou on a day trip from Marrakech, although it is a long day. The most comfortable option is to include it in a multi-day route to the Merzouga or Zagora desert.
