The Draa Valley: the great palm grove of southern Morocco

The Draa Valley is one of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Morocco: a river that rises in the High Atlas and flows towards the Sahara, lined by a long oasis of date palms, adobe kasbahs and villages that seem frozen in time.

The longest river in Morocco

The Draa is the longest river in the country. Today it rarely reaches the sea, but along its valley lies one of the largest palm groves in Morocco, with more than a hundred kilometers of oases between Agdz and Zagora.

Agdz and its kasbahs

Agdz is the gateway to the valley, at the foot of Mount Kissane. Nearby are kasbahs such as Tamnougalt, an old adobe ksar you can explore with a local guide. Walking through the palm grove, among orchards watered by traditional channels, is a peaceful way to discover oasis life.

Tamegroute

Near Zagora, Tamegroute is known for its green-glazed pottery and its old Koranic library, with manuscripts several centuries old.

Zagora and the desert

At the end of the valley is Zagora, the starting point for camel treks to the nearby dunes. It is the most accessible desert from Marrakech: you can go and come back in just two days.

Tips

  • The best time to travel through the valley is from October to April.
  • Stop at the roadside viewpoints: the views of the palm grove are spectacular.
