The High Atlas Mountains: Berber villages and mountain landscapes

The High Atlas is the highest mountain range in North Africa and forms a natural wall between Marrakech and the desert. Its green valleys, adobe Berber villages and snow-capped peaks in winter offer a very different Morocco from the cities.

Toubkal, the roof of North Africa

At 4,167 meters, Jebel Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa. Its ascent, usually done in two days from the village of Imlil, is a challenge for fit hikers, with no technical climbing needed outside winter.

Imlil and the Asni valley

An hour and a half from Marrakech, Imlil is the starting point for many hiking routes. From here you can walk among walnut trees and terraced fields to villages such as Aroumd and learn about the life of Berber families, who will invite you to mint tea.

Berber (Amazigh) culture

The Berbers are the native people of North Africa and their culture is still very much alive in the Atlas: their language, Tamazight, their music, their rugs and their hospitality. Visiting a traditional house or a weekly mountain souk is a very authentic experience.

Nature and wildlife

Unique species such as the Barbary macaque and the Barbary sheep live in the Atlas, along with forests of cedar, holm oak and juniper. It is a paradise for hiking, photography and birdwatching.

The Tizi n’Tichka pass

If you travel to the desert from Marrakech, you will cross the Atlas via this 2,260-meter pass, with spectacular views and villages clinging to the slopes.

When to go

April to June and September to October are the best times for hiking. In winter there is snow on the peaks, and in summer the mountains are a cool refuge from the heat of Marrakech.
