The Ouzoud waterfalls are the highest in Morocco: the water drops about 110 meters in several cascades, surrounded by greenery, olive trees and rainbows. They are in the Middle Atlas, about three hours from Marrakech, and are the perfect getaway to escape the heat of the city.
What to do in Ouzoud
- Walk down the trails: a path circles the falls from top to bottom, with viewpoints at every level.
- Cross the river by boat: small boats take you to the foot of the waterfall to see it from below.
- See the Barbary macaques: they live in the wild in the area. Watch them, but don’t feed them.
- The mills: at the top a few traditional mills are still working.
- Lunch with a view: the riverside terraces serve tagines facing the falls.
Name and landscape
«Ouzoud» comes from the Berber word meaning «to grind grain», after the mills that used the power of the water. The landscape changes with the seasons: in spring the falls carry more water.
Tips
- Wear comfortable shoes: the trails have steps and can be wet.
- Go on a weekday if you can; at weekends there are more local visitors.
- It is a full-day excursion: you leave in the morning and return to Marrakech in the afternoon.
