Ourika Valley: an Atlas getaway from Marrakech

Just an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is the easiest way to discover the High Atlas Mountains. A green valley crossed by a river, with adobe Berber villages clinging to the slopes, argan cooperatives and waterfalls. It is the ideal getaway if you are short on time.

What to see in the Ourika Valley

  • The Setti Fatma waterfalls: at the end of the valley, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point of a trail that climbs to seven waterfalls. The first is easy to reach; the following ones require a little more effort.
  • The Tnine Ourika souk: every Monday there is a weekly market where villagers buy, sell and exchange news.
  • A Berber house: many families open their homes to show how they live and offer you tea and freshly baked bread.
  • Argan cooperatives: local women make argan oil by hand.
  • Lunch by the river: the valley’s restaurants have tables over the water; tagine tastes better here.

When to go

In spring the valley is greener and the waterfalls carry more water. In summer it is a cool refuge from the heat of Marrakech, although there are more visitors at weekends.

Tips

  • Wear shoes with a good grip if you are going up to the waterfalls.
  • If it rains heavily, the river can rise: always follow the local guides’ instructions.
