Todra Gorges and Dades Valley: the most spectacular south

On the way between the High Atlas and the desert lie two of the most impressive landscapes in Morocco: the Todra Gorges and the Dades Valley. They are a must on any route to the Merzouga desert.

The Todra Gorges

Near the town of Tinghir, the Todra river has carved a canyon with vertical walls that in places exceed 300 meters in height and narrow to just a few meters wide. Walk along the bottom of the canyon next to the crystal-clear river: it is an easy and spectacular walk. It is also very well known among climbers.

The Dades Valley

The Dades Valley combines palm groves, adobe kasbahs and curiously shaped rock formations, such as the so-called «monkey fingers». Its road of hairpin bends is one of the most photographed in Morocco. Sleeping here and watching the sunset from a terrace is a great plan.

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs

Between Ouarzazate and Tinghir, the road follows the so-called «Road of a Thousand Kasbahs»: fortified adobe villages, palm groves and oases. Along the way are Skoura, with its palm grove and the Kasbah Amridil, and Kalaat M’Gouna.

The Valley of Roses

Kalaat M’Gouna is the center of the Valley of Roses, where the Damask rose is grown. The rose festival is held in May, and all year round you can buy rose water and natural cosmetics.

Tips

  • Bring warm clothes: nights in the Dades Valley are cool.
  • Ideally, spend a night in the Dades Valley on your way to the desert.
