Less than an hour from Fez are two must-see sights that can be combined in a single day: the imperial city of Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Meknes, the city of Moulay Ismail
In the 17th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail made Meknes his capital and surrounded it with kilometers of walls. Today it is a quieter and less touristy city than Fez or Marrakech.
- Bab Mansour: one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco, decorated with tiles and marble columns brought from Volubilis.
- El Hedim square: the large square in front of Bab Mansour, full of life at sunset.
- Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail: one of the few shrines non-Muslims can visit.
- Royal granaries and Sahrij Souani pool: huge structures that show the sultan’s ambition.
Volubilis
Volubilis was one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana. Its ruins, amid olive groves and wheat fields, are the best preserved in Morocco. Walk among the triumphal arch, the basilica, the capitol and the houses with their original mosaics, which depict mythological scenes such as the labors of Hercules.
Moulay Idriss
Very close to Volubilis is Moulay Idriss, a holy town and place of pilgrimage where the founder of Morocco’s first dynasty is buried. Its white silhouette over two hills is beautiful.
Tips
- Visit Volubilis early in the morning or late in the afternoon: there is little shade.
- Bring water and sun protection.
- Ideally visit them on the way between Chefchaouen or Rabat and Fez.
